The Child & Youth Advocacy Centre for Newfoundland and Labrador began development following the establishment of an Interagency Steering Committee in 2017. The Interagency Steering Committee, led by the host agency Key Assets, is comprised of community and government partners, including the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development; Royal Newfoundland Constabulary; Royal Canadian Mounted Police; Victim Services, Justice and Public Safety; Eastern Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health; Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre; and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. With funding provided by the Department of Justice, a feasibility study was completed in 2018, and the need for the development of a Child & Youth Advocacy Centre in Newfoundland and Labrador (CYAC-NL) was reaffirmed.
The CYAC-NL will bring together multidisciplinary teams in a co-located model, to provide an integrated, coordinated and comprehensive response that is client-centered and trauma-informed and designed to address the needs of children and youth who have been victims of or witnesses to crime and their families. CYAC services are voluntary and offered to children, youth and their non-offending family members during the investigation process by police and/or child protection services. The CYAC multidisciplinary team will provide both immediate and ongoing supports and will seek to minimize system-induced trauma and support longer-term well-being by providing a child-friendly facility for young victims and their families. This model of service provision will see a more communicative and collaborative system for the professionals working with children, youth and families at the Centre. The CYAC-NL is scheduled to open in fall 2021.

|Cedar Centre is the lead agency for the development of a Child and Youth Advocacy for York Region. Project partners include York Regional Police and York Region Children’s Aid Society. We are currently in the model development phase of the project and are aiming to have a pilot in place by July 2022.
This project would not be possible without the generous support of our funders, the Department of Justice Canada, and Ontario Trillium Foundation.
